CANADA SUMMER JOBS
“The rights and freedoms set out in … the Canadian Charter reflect the pursuit of an ideal: a free and democratic society. This pursuit requires the state to encourage everyone to participate freely in public life regardless of their beliefs”
– Chief Justice Dickson of the Supreme Court of Canada
We have had summer students now for about a decade to help run children’s camps. Because of the grant we are able to provide a high-quality experience at a low cost. We focus on hiring visible minorities as a part of our leadership team. Each week we have 50 children enrolled from around our community.
We have participated in the CSJ program for years. The funding is used for a wide variety of positions, including water quality monitoring in local waterways and to tend a garden which provides food to local foodbanks. CSJ also assists us in hiring staff for
Summer Rays, our on-campus summer program for area children.
In the past, the CSJ grant enabled us to annually hire 16 students and train them as camp directors, sports coaches and inclusion coaches (working with children with exceptionalities). Without the CSJ grant our ability to offer these low-cost sport camps in Southern and Central Ontario has been severely diminished. Unless we can find alternative funding, hundreds of children with special needs or from low-income families may not be able to attend camp.
